Aros for Quirky + GE

While I was at Quirky we resisted lots of offers to partner with big established brands. GE came along at exactly the right time and we worked closely to help reinvent their brand and technologies in the consumer space. Most importantly, Quirky and GE collaborated to build a full line of connected smart products. Leveraging GE’s brand, scale, and technologies with the Quirky process and a great community-submitted idea (from Dr. Garthen Leslie), we designed and delivered the world’s smartest air conditioner in less than 100 days.

Dr. Garthen Leslie spent time at the Department of Energy, but it was his own dysfunctional air conditioner that sparked the idea for Aros. That old-school A/C left him with only two options: waste expensive electricity while he was away or return to nasty, stuffy summer heat. So he dreamt up a smarter air conditioner. His idea fit seamlessly with our growing line of smart home products. Once we started moving forward 2,238 influencers in Quirky’s online community helped us make Aros a reality for Garthen.

In a matter of months, we took Garthen’s smart idea from a fledgling concept to a final product. We worked closely with GE’s appliance division to engineer and develop Aros by leveraging GE’s existing machinery, while adding smart technology and an unprecedented design.

In typical Quirky fashion the marketing campaign for Aros was legendary. Quirky staff dressed up in Hawaiian shirts and hand delivered & installed air conditioners from Aros branded ice cream trucks around New York City. A city wide advertising campaign also ran during summer 2014.
